The day I arrive in London. Returning from church, I exit the tube and notice a couple about fifteen yards away. They have planted themselves in the middle of the sidewalk and are embracing, tongues down each other’s throats. As I approach, I notice they are wearing matching t-shirts. cute. Blue with yellow letters on the back… “While I snog your mate.”
Ten yards and they’re still at it.
The sleeves of their shirts show a church. What weird evangelism. Perhaps “we’re waiting for marriage, but not dramatic pda?”
Or some type of social experiment…. Norm breaking.
Five yards away and I feel myself digging for my cell phone. Am I really tacky enough to take a picture of this? ehhh… yes.
Then her hand darts up from his waist and covers the words! Lost that picture.
I pass by and try to quell temptation to throw a glance over my shoulder. Twenty yards away and I give in… still going.
I continue down the street and see stop at the ATM. While waiting I watch them walk twenty steps and set up shop again in the middle of the sidewalk. If these people didn’t have English shirts on, I’d think they were French.
Then they continue walking and meet up with another couple. Both couples acknowledge each other and begin making out (with respective partners) again.
So this has to be a social experiment. Or a reality tv show. “While I snog your mate” Catchy.
They’re about to pass as I’m taking my receipt. Do I say something? Hell, why not?
“Excuse me, is this some kind of public act?” I ask when they’re next to me.
They look at each other and continue walking forward… out of hesitation? Reluctance?
Last ditch effort: “What church are you apart of?”
Another look and a devilish grin, “Church of England.” They continue on to the next tube station where they meet up with the other couple and begin kissing again.
Putting my wallet back into my purse, I approach the cross walk and give another look for camera crews. None.
I guess I’m coming back from the wrong church.
