13th October: Day 1
It’s all falling into place… the long abandoned blog that desperately needs updating, the fear that I can’t think of anything witty to write about even through I really want to write…. and then the thought. Today was the fifth time, thank you Virgin Atlantic. You plied me to finally book my December flight to New York, while saying, “You only live once.” I know! There was that Oprah episode in June with the cancer patients. And that last lecture.
And then R’s advice to live like each day is my last a few weeks ago. And K reminding me this weekend that worry binds people, that we only have one life. And then you, Virgin.
So I get the point. Today, 13th October, is three months exactly before my birthday. I’ve decided to heed all of the poking that is coming from every direction. I’ll do it. Live every day like it’s my last. Or at least do one thing that I wouldn’t have done if I wasn’t living that day as my last. And I’ll reveal it. The good, the bad, and the downright mortifying….
First up, posting bad photos. End of the day. Exhausted. Usually only post the beauty shots. But here they are. Bad flash. No makeup. Unflattering angles. Not that exciting. But I wouldn’t normally do it.
Oh yes, and one more thing. Walking along the Thames near Embankment. Looking at all of the lights on the river. Listening to Joss Stone. A smile spreads across my face. I desperately want to let my hips go, pull on the tie of one of the hot men in suits passing by, luring him in, and lip synch “Are you digging on me?” I retrain myself. Make my way onto a rocking boat. Search for the Artisan Meeting. No one’s there. I’m one week early. So I trudge up the stairs in frustration. In the middle of the step is a huge leaf. Unremarkable in colour, but definitely a standout in size. I walk towards Westminster and the idea pops into my head. I definitely need to walk across the Hungerford Foot Bridge, make a wish and drop my enormous leaf into the Thames. Utterly ridiculous. But maybe the wish will also serve as a prayer and God will hear? So I walk halfway across the bridge. And I’m mortified. Like the people passing by me may know what I’m about to do…? I let the leaf go and wait for it to sail into the water. But it blows back into the rails. I pick it up and walk to the other side. It drops down down down. And hits the water. So far. I’m a bit sad. It’s gone. Oh my God, what’s the matter with me? IT’S ONLY A LEAF! But maybe it just might conjure that wish….?
